Philosophy Statement

In today’s environment of easily accessible information and ever changing technology, we, as educators, must prepare students to be able to function in the 21st century environment. We must provide students with the skills and the tools that will allow them to be lifelong learners. That means stepping back from leading the classroom in order to guide and coach students from the side. Students must be empowered to personalize and “own” their own educational performance and achievement.

As a music and drama teacher, I aim to nurture my students’ love and appreciation for the arts. I strive to create a classroom where creativity, collaboration and critical thinking are not only taught, but practiced daily; a space where students are encouraged to take risks and are free to fail along the way while also placing emphasis on diligence, practice and hard work; a place where the students’ individual strengths are recognized and celebrated while weaknesses are acknowledged and improved upon; a place where self reflection and critical assessments are an essential element in order to improve, grow and achieve a high standard of performance.

Lastly, if I seek  to encourage these 21st century skills in our students, then I must emulate that same quality.  Staying abreast of the new trends in technology and educational practices are reflective of the lifelong learning habits that I strive to instill on my students.  For, if I demand these skills of our students, how can I not demand them of myself as well?
